Numerous questions on RK Launcher, wallpapers, icons, widgets, etc.

Recommended Posts

A few days ago, after having to format my computer and lose all of my files (don't ask. Just don't) I realized something.......the windows desktop is unspeakably ugly. After a bit of browsing through this forum I found out that I could actually customize it to look like the Mac OS desktop. Yay right? Nay. I've having a bit of growing pain in the proccess and since all of you people seem to be experts I figured there was no better place to ask for help. Keep in mind that I don't need a 100% mac replica I'd just like to fully utilize the oh-so pretty RK launcher.

I've installed RKLauncher (which is awesome) but I find that I still need to use the green 'start' toolbar every once in a while. So here are my questions, folks:

1- Everytime i start the comput I need to use the toolbar to launch RK (I dont like desktop icons), is there a way to make it automatic? Or is it simply an illusion.

2- This is gonna sound silly but I don't know how exactly to keep track of multiple windows. Is there a method to make it so I can see the multiple windows by clicking on the RK icon?

3- Kind of random but a few months ago I found this kickass yellow 'banana' wallpaper (kind of like a circled banana icon in the middle). Anyone know where I could find it?

4- How do I close programs from the RK launcher (windows messenger for example. I can sign off and close the window but the greyed out little icon is still present until i use.....urgh, windows.

5- Any icons suggestion for the following? Ares. Azureus. Wordpad. Nes emulator.

6- Once more with the random but hum..a good and virusless NES emulator?

7- I know that the mac OS comes with a tool bar on top of the screen. What does it do and where could I get it?

8- Is there a way to permanently LOCK windows toolbar and if so, is it recommended?

9- I miss being able to tell the time just with a glance (oh the problems of my life haha) is there a SAFE clock widget out there that doesn't take too much space and doesn't slow down everything?

Now I know these are a lot of questions from a where-the-hell-did-you-come-from newbie but if you can help me I promise to buy you a puppy. And honestly, who can say no to a puppy?

well...not everything but a lot. Heres some tips:

-to have RKLauncher start automatically on restart, go to the RKLauncher directory (My Computer>Local Disk (C: )>Program Files>RKLauncher_Beta...or something around there. Now right click on RKLauncher.exe and go to "Create Shortcut". Now take the shortcut and put it in the Start Up Folder. This can be found by clicking Start>Programs>Double Click "Startup" and place the shortcut there. Now..i dont know what you mean by keeping track of all your windows. Do you mean minimizing or what? The wallpaper, i cant help you with. Now, closing apps from RKLauncher. You can't do that yet (im pretty sure). All you have do to is if you minimize a window (e.g. a MSN convo), Just click it, it will reopen, and just close it. Now onto Objectbar. Objectbar is a stardock Application, and is only available for trial edition. You can download it and use it for 60 days or buy it. Objectbar is the bar at the top of the Mac OS X computer. Once you use that, you won't need the windows toolbar. To lock your Windows toolbar however, right click on it>properties>and check "lock toolbar". Now for the clock, i will attach it, and all you have to do is download Yahoo Widget Engine, formally known as Konfabulator. Download that attachment i...attached and run it. Voila! Anything else you would like to know??

P.S.: there are many, many, many articles on this. I suggest you search next time ;)

Thank you so much. You rock. I did search around (not the 112 page results but the first handful) and since I had so many different questions I figured...what is one more thread?

I guess my remaining RK-related issue is all about how to use it. I just dont know the basics. Sometimes when I minimize a window it simply disappears and no matter how much I click on the RK icon it still doesn't come back. I have to rerun to the windows bar to get it back.

I wish the icons had more functions and utilities i guess.

My Nightly Build of RKLauncher lets you close the windows by right clicking the minimized icon in the dock, then hitting close. (NOT Exit, that closes the dock.) Firefox also minimizes just fine, and IM conversation windows bounce when a new message is sent your way.

I've used it for weeks and have yet to find a bug, by the way. Also, might I reccomend you get this:

http://www.osx-e.com/downloads/docks/realdockrk.html

Before even running RkLauncher, you can extract that icon zip to make it immediately have Mac OS X icons.

Oh, and made you an icon. Just modified the banner on the site.

Also found this http://www.ceptive.it/icone/gallery/ares_icon.png lemme know if you want me to make that an icon.

One for Azureus and Wordpad are coming up.

As for managing windows, if you click the icon for the program on the dock, it will focus on it. The way to do this is right-click the icon>Dock Item Properties>then Check Same Instance.

RK Launcher can hide your taskbar for you, without any danger at all. Just right-click>settings>Behavior, and check "Hide the taskbar"

If you miss your Start Menu, you'll enjoy this: http://www.wincustomize.com/viewskin.aspx?...=29&SkinID=2373

Hope I've helped. Bye for now, I'll be watching your thread. And hey don't sweat it. Welcome to Aqua-Soft.

Wow that's amazing. Thanks a lot. To all other replies too. Neat bunch. I downloaded the objectbar and its pretty much taken care of all my multiple window woes. and with those dock tips everything should be care. Can't wait for those icons btw :D I would REALLY like that Custom Ares one. So bloody shiny.

Also I wanted to know are there any objectbars around that last more than 2 months for free?
