Notification Box

Recommended Posts

I think it would be a great idea if there was a program that displays notifications such as, "You are connected to the Internet", "You have received an email", "Download Complete"...etc in a box.

This idea popped up on me when using the PS3. If you don't know what I'm talking about, this is an excellent picture that says it all:

notification001.jpg

Scenario:

Let's say you are typing something on Microsoft Word and also downloading a file. Let's also say you forgot that you were downloading a file. So, your typing something and then on the top-right corner of your screen a box pops up and says "Download Completed". You say "Oh yeah... I forgot about that".

Isn't this a great idea? Except I don't think this even exist on Windows. Anyways, is there a program like this or is anyone thinking of making a program like this? By the way, this idea is very useful.

This is awesome! Nice find. Do you think someone could perhaps make it so that it announces it by voice? I think it would be cool to have an app that announced every hour, the time, temperature, stock quote, etc.

It´s not a bad idea, not at all, but must have his own voice or better else a hole bunch of voice to choose from, cause I fuc*kin hate the damn Microsoft Sam!

Avedesk has an option to make icons talk whrn you mouse over or something, but it has to be with that hateful voice!

By da way... does someone knows about a site to download more of these text to speach voices?

I remember that on my first computer there was 2 or 3 to choose from....

I just searched the development forums. I guess they're working on it maybe? Anyways maybe some of our developers here could help/improve it? I currently don't understand how to make it give application alerts or even reminders. I see the spot to put in reminders, but it won't let me put them in?

It would be great to be able to log into my computer and have my computer tell me various bits of information that I want to know, all my appointments, birthdays, stock quotes, weather, forecast, like everything. It would be great if we could get the great developers on this site together and create an excellent one. I just feel terrible though because I have no development skills at all, the only thing I'm adept at is bug testing, malware removal & speedup. I really wish there was something I could do to contribute.

Also here is open source software for text to speech.

Hi @all,

as I am the webmaster of the Snarl homepage I am watching activly the referers to it. So I found this thread and would like to offer some informations :) Let's see if I get all open questions and points:

- website design: yes, originally inspired by the Growl homepage (as Snarl itself is inspired by Growl) - both Chris (the Snarl developer) and me are Mac users at home ;)

-Styles / Skinning: possible starting with 2.1 already (only the documentation is unfinished until now ;)) - I have played with that and made some styles of my own - see http://tlhan-ghun.de/?q=node/1851 (I am not somene who is great in any art ;))

- Speaking / Voices: planned for thet release 2.2 as this wish has been brought to use quite frequently the last days. It is planned to be development as own style so you can choose to speak some and other make their toaster popups

- Reminders: the included ones are not finished so they don't work :( But you can use Thunderbird with the Lightning extension and/or Sunbird for birthday/meeting/... reminders if you want

In general Snarl lives from developers includuing it into external applications - sometimes directly into the main app, sometimes by a plugin/extension/... So if you think "I would love to have a notification in my app xyz maybe it's a good start to go to their forum and place a feature request. The number of supported apps is growing quite fast now ;) There are include files for mainly all important programming languages so embedding basic notifications is normally done in a few minutes. I and some developers around Snarl are always happy to help where requested :)
